Statement of significance:
Primary Significance:
The Edinglassie property including the Edinglassie homestead, associated buildings and Rous Lench cottage are closely associated with the earliest European occupation of the area and collectively represent one of the earliest land grants of the initial settlement of the Hunter Valley;

The Edinglassie property demonstrates various phases of human activities such as settlement and clearing, water supply and management, sheep and cattle running, development of specialist cattle breeding activities, recreation, viticulture and horse breeding;

The Edinglassie homestead with its associated outbuildings and Rous Lench cottage are good architectural examples of their type and style;

The Edinglassie property demonstrates an excellent application of the Arcadian design approach to the siting of structures and elements in the landscape which is rare in the region;

Secondary significance:
The place is also significant because:
It is associated with George Forbes, the original grantee, who was one of the ‘gentry’ settlers in the early settlement of the area;

It is associated with a prominent family, the Whites, a leading pastoral dynasty, who were synonymous with the opening and development of the region;

It illustrates the degree of opulence achieved and lifestyles led by the leading pastoral families in the area;

It is associated with a significant Australian architect, John Horbury Hunt;

It is a well known landmark, and has provided a community focus over a number of generations form the turn of the 19th century;

It has extant and potential intact archaeological evidence capable of helping interpret past occupation and lifestyles of the area (Tropman & Tropman Architects, 1993, 149).

The siting of the homestead is intrinsic to its significance.
Date significance updated: 31 Jul 07

Description
Construction years: 1880-1895
Physical description: Site/Grounds
The house is approached through original iron gates and through well kept grounds containing many fine mature trees, including some Queensland species brought from other White family properties. The homestead is set back from the access road, and a substantial line of screening trees fronts the entrance. The siting of the homestead is intrinsic to its significance.

House
A 2 storey sandstone house with hipped iron roof of simplified Italianate style built in two stages c1880, and c1895, for James White. Each elevation is assymetrical about a large full height projecting bay with a continuous single storey verandah (originally 2 stories to east and south) supported on cast iron columns stamped `F. REVETT, W. MAITLAND.’

The fourteen principal rooms have a variety of pressed metal ceilings and marble and timber fireplaces whilst the fine joinery throughout is of cedar. All joinery has been sensitively restored.

Outbuildings
A timber bridge links across a large trussed roof breezeway to a 2 storey service wing containing the original kitchen. Close to the house is the fine stables group of buildings designed by Hunt in timber and built in the 1880s. Although lacking in the more exuberant details characteristic of Hunt’s work, these buildings nonetheless form a coherent and impressive whole. Other buildings include a meat house, killing shed and dovecote.

Site/Grounds
The house is approached through original iron gates and through well kept grounds containing many fine mature trees, including some Queensland species brought from other White family properties.
Modifications and dates: 2004 Power line installed across front of property, involving the removal of 3 trees: The proposal involves the removal of 3 trees. An arborist report, submitted as part of the application identifies this fabric as:

1 x yellow box, Eucalyptus melliodora, 40-45 years old, 12 meters high &
2 x Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra ‘Italica), native to Italy. 10-14 years old. 5 meters high
Former use: agriculture
History
Historical notes: The land on which both Edinglassie and Rous Lench are located was the original Portion 4 of the Parish of Brougham in the County of Durham. This comprised an area of 1280 acres the deed of grant for which was issued to George Forbes on 1 August 1839. Like many grants of the period the land had been occupied for many years before it was officially surveyed and the deed grant issued.

A 2 storey sandstone house with hipped iron roof of simplified Italianate style built in two stages c1880, and c1895, for James White.

The name Maryot is only seen listed on 2 occasions in all Australian documents.
It is not listed in BDM registrys in York UK from 1837 to 2010, so I believe it to be miss spelt or deliberately changed by George Marriott to Mariot.
Or also it could be a miss spelling when Elizabeth Marriott was married. (Maryot)
Marriott is a common name.

History
* Prior to European occupation the district around Binalong was occupied by Ngunawal and Wiradjuri Aboriginal people.

* In 1821 Hamilton Hume and a party were the first Europeans to explore the area.

* Hume returned with William Hovell in 1824 during their expedition to Port Phillip Bay (i.e., Melbourne) but they passed further south along the Murrumbidgee River.

* In 1829 Governor Darling declared that the Binalong district was beyond the legal limit of settlement.

* This restriction did not seem to stop settlers who brought flocks of sheep into the area and squatted illegally.

* In 1835 James Manning squatted at Cumbumurra Station between Binalong and Jugiong.

* In 1839 a police border camp was established at Binalong. This was the first European settlement in the area.

* In 1841 Binalong had a population of eleven.

* In 1847 a permanent police force was established. That same year the Swan Inn was open for business.

* By 1848 most of the surrounding area had been settled with large grazing leases.

* The town’s first post office was opened for business in 1849.

* A prison block was built in 1850. That year the town was surveyed and gazetted.

* In 1861 both St Peter & St Paul’s Catholic Church and the town’s first school were opened.

* The local police station was completed in 1862.

* During 1863 and 1864 Ben Hall’s bushranging gang was active in the district.

* In 1865 Johnny Gilbert, a member of Hall’s gang, was killed during a gunfight on the Boorowa Road, near Binalong.

* In 1869 A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson moved to nearby ‘Illalong’ station at the age of five when his father bought the property.

* Paterson attended school at Binalong but, in 1874, was sent to Sydney Grammar School. His father is buried in the local cemetery.

* The railway arrived in 1876. Binalong became a departure point for gold shipments from Lambing Flat.

* In 1883 an impressive railway station was built after the first railway station burnt down. That same year the local Court House was completed.

* The local Mechanics Institute was built in 1912.

About James Morrison
At the time of his death, James Morrison was a grazier in Cowra.

The following is text from the Sydney Morning Herald of 13 October 1938.
It appears to concern legal proceedings undertaken by James’ three children following his death, as they had not been named as beneficiaries of his estate:

TESTATOR’S FAMILY MAINTENANCE. Mrs. Mary Hend, of Belmore, Mrs. Louisa Hend, of Coonabarabran, and John Morrison, of Belmore,
daughters and son respectively of Mr. James Morrison, grazier, of Cowra, applied under the Testator’s Family Maintenance Act
for orders in respect of their late father’s estate.

The late Mr. Morrison, a widower, left an estate of £5,679 net, which by his will he gave to friends to the exclusion of his family. John Morrison, the applicant son, is an invalid pensioner, aged 58 years. His evidence was that he left school when he was 12,
and during the whole of the following 45 years worked for his father without ever receiving one penny of wages.
He had been in ill health for several years before leaving his father’s home in 1936.

His Honor ordered that £600 be set aside and invested for each applicant on realisation of a mortgage, an asset In the estate.
If any applicant dies before exhaustion of his or her share of the fund, it was ordered that any balance remaining should fall
into residue.

28 Feb 1897 John Morrison died this morning.[Cowra Free Press 4 March 1897: On Sunday at about 8 p.m., one of the most popular
of our young townsmen, Mr John Morrison, who had been an acute sufferer for several years from heart disease and dropsy,
died at the residence of his sister Mrs Wm Robertson, in our town. For many years the late Mr Morrison was a faithful and confidential employee of Mr D C J Donnelly, and while serving in that capacity he won hosts of friends through his kindly disposition and considerate and obliging habits. He took a keen interest in sport of all kinds and was an ardent admirer of the turf. The esteem in which our departed young townsman was held was amply testified by the very large number of sorrowing friends who followed his remains on Monday afternoon to the Presbyterian portion of the cemetery; where the last sad rites were impressively performed by the Rev J McAndrew. The late Mr Morrison, who was in only his 27th year, leaves a very large circle of relatives, all of whom are old and very much respected residents of our town and district, to mourn their loss.]

Hurst went to the funeral.

Biography
Sophia was born about 1842 in NSW Australia. She married John Squires in 1855 and left him shortly afterwards. [1] She was living with her daughter Sophia Morrison when she passed away in 1931. She is buried in Gunnedah Cemetery. [2]

Research Notes
Sophia went by many names, including Sophia Jane Squires (her legal married name), Sophia White[3], Jane White [4], Sophia Shaw [5] and Sophia Jane Webb (her birth name) [6].

According to her obituary [7] she was born on a property called Edinglassie in Muswellbrook in 1830. The location may be correct but the date is unlikely as she needed parental consent to marry in 1855 [8] and had a son in 1880[9]. Likely birth date is c1842, but no birth record has been found yet.

She was buried as Sophia Squires and it appears she did not marry Samuel Hen.[10]
